Challenge
The Bratislava Public Transport Company (DPB) announced a public tender for an advanced camera system for a fleet of 189 buses and trams. Each vehicle was to receive 7 cameras, a recording device, and a monitor, a total of more than 1,300 IP cameras within a short timeframe.
The challenge wasn't only the volume of work, but also the precise coordination and logistics, you can't simply park a fleet. And then came the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was a small-but-big dream for us, the chance to show our know-how on one of the largest public transport projects in Slovakia.
Solution
Omnius won the public tender and got to work. To handle both volume and deadline, we invested in automating the installation processes:
- Custom scripts for configuring cameras and modems, developed by our team
- Automated deployment processes that saved hundreds of hours of manual work
- Logistics coordinated with DPB operations, vehicles were modified during scheduled downtime
- Three branches and our own vehicle fleet allowed parallel deployment by multiple teams
The pandemic as a headwind
We started the project just as the coronavirus pandemic hit the world. Restrictions, quarantines, and constantly changing regulations were a significant obstacle. Despite this, we delivered the project on time.
Result
- Financial savings for the public contracting authority: 2/3 of the estimated contract value, our record so far in delivering high value at a competitive price
- 1,300+ IP cameras running in live public transport operations
- 189 vehicles equipped with a system enabling monitoring, fast incident resolution, and valuable data for further service improvements
- More than 100 steel drill bits used up (a small detail, but it illustrates the scope well)
- Camera boxes were carefully separated for recycling and taken to the waste collection yard more than 6 times in our own vehicles, we take sustainability seriously
Conclusion
This project is proof that with determination, innovation, and a strong team, even the biggest challenges can be tackled. Winning the public tender for the Public Transport Company and successfully delivering such a large project during a global pandemic is an achievement we are still proud of today.
